mosquito /mos·qui·to/ (mos-ke´to) [Sp.] a bloodsucking and venomous insect of the family Culicidae, including the genera Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, and Mansonia.

n. pl. mos·qui·toes or mos·qui·tos
Any of various two-winged insects of the family Culicidae, in which the female of most species has a long proboscis for sucking blood. Some species are vectors of diseases such as malaria and yellow fever.

mosquito
blood-sucking insect of the genera Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Taeniorhynchus (Mansonia) and Psorophora. Some species are concerned with the transmission of diseases, such as equine encephalomyelitis, filarial nematodes, avian malaria and Rift Valley fever.
