Moraxella /Mo·rax·el·la/ (mo-rak-sel´ah) a genus of bacteria (family Neisseriaceae), made up of gram-negative, short, aerobic, nonpigmented organisms found as parasites and pathogens on the mucous membranes of mammals; it includes two subgenera: M. (Moraxella) and M. (Branhamella). M. (Branhamel´la) catarrha´lis is a normal inhabitant of the human nasal cavity and nasopharynx, occasionally causing otitis media or respiratory disease. M. (Moraxel´la) lacuna´ta causes conjunctivitis and corneal infections.
