Aid man, combat medic, military medical corpsman. A non-physician member of a medical detachment who is assigned to a company, battery, troop, battalion, etc., and trained to give first aid and trauma care to the wounded on the battlefield and forward information about specific casualties to the battalion or regimental surgeon. Combat medics travel with troops and are protected under the Geneva Convention. While they carry a weapon, it is for self-defence or to protect the wounded under the medics’ care. Offensive use of the weapon results in forfeiture of the Convention’s protection.
