interosseous membrane of the leg

fibrous membrane between adjacent interosseous borders of tibia and fibula, perforated proximally by anterior tibial vessels, and distally by peroneal artery; forms origin for parts of tibialis posterior, flexor hallucis longus and anterior-compartment muscles; its fibres are directed diagonally downward and laterally from tibia to fibula, permitting some vertical movement of lateral malleolus in response to ground reaction forces during heel impact
