Microsporum /Mi·cros·po·rum/ (-spor´um) a genus of fungi that cause diseases of skin and hair, including M. audoui´ni, M. ca´nis, M. ful´vum, and M. gyp´seum.
Microsporum [-spôr′əm] Etymology: Gk, mikros + sporos, seed a genus of dermatophytes of the family Moniliaceae. The spores are multiseptate and variable in shape and have thin or thick walls. One species is M. audouinii, which causes epidemic tinea capitis in children. Others are M. canis and M. gypseum. Formerly called Microsporon. Microsporum [mi″kro-spor´um] a genus of fungi that cause diseases of the skin and hair such as tinea capitis and tinea corporis. Species include M. audoui´nii, M. ca´nis (M. lano´sum), and M. ful´vum (M. gyp´seum).

Microsporum canis var distortum principally an infection of laboratory primates, but occurs also in dogs and cats. Microsporum fulvum occasionally infects pigs, goats, monkeys, jaguars and lions. Microsporum gallinae causes favus in chickens and turkeys. Microsporum gypseum a soil dermatophyte that causes ringworm in dogs, horses and sometimes other species. Microsporum nanum causes ringworm in pigs and rarely other animals and humans. Microsporum persicolor
