microphthalmos /mi·croph·thal·mos/ (mi″krof-thal´mus) abnormal smallness in all dimensions of one or both eyes. microphthalmos [mī′krəfthal′məs] Etymology: Gk, mikros + ophthalmos, eye a developmental anomaly characterized by abnormal smallness of one or both eyes. When the condition occurs in the absence of other ocular defects, it is called pure microphthalmos or nanophthalmos. Also spelled microphthalmus. Also called microphthalmia. microphthalmic, adj. microphthalmos, n a developmental anomaly characterized by abnormal smallness of one or both eyes. microphthalmos abnormal smallness in all dimensions of one or both eyes, sometimes in association with other ocular abnormalities. Recorded as occurring in piglets from sows on vitamin A-deficient diets in early pregnancy, and in dogs, where it is associated with collie eye anomaly and is an inherited defect in some breeds. pure. microphthalmos see nanophthalmos.
