Michaelis-Menten hypothesis

(mi-kā'lis men'tĕn),
a hypothesis that a complex is formed between an enzyme and its substrate (also known as the O'Sullivan-Tompson hypothesis), which complex then decomposes to yield free enzyme and the reaction products (also referred to as the Brown hypothesis), the latter step being the rate-determining step for the overall rate of substrate-product conversion.
