methysergide maleate [meth′isur′jīd] a vasoconstrictor. indication It is prescribed for relief of migraine headache. contraindications Pregnancy, severe infection, liver or kidney dysfunction, cardiovascular or lung disease, or known hypersensitivity to this drug prohibits its use. It is not recommended for use in children. adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are retroperitoneal fibrosis; hallucinations; abnormally low white cell count; pulmonary and cardiac complications; hemolytic anemia; leg cramps; and pain in the chest, abdomen, back, hands, or feet. methysergide maleate (meth´isur´jī mā´lēāt), n brand name: Sansert; drug class: serotonin antagonist; action: competitively blocks serotonin HT receptors in central nervous system and periphery; uses: prophylaxis for migraine and other vascular headaches.
