methylsalicylate (meˈ·thl·s·liˑ·s·lāt),
n a liquid ester with the chemical formula C8H8O3 that is derived from the bark of a birch,
Betula lenta or the leaves of wintergreen,
Gaultheria procumbens; used as an antiinflammatory, counterirritant, or flavoring agent and to treat pharyngitis, chorea, lumbago, orchitis, mumps, neuralgia, and rheumatism—chronic and acute; precautions: highly toxic. In children a directly ingested dose of less than one teaspoon has been lethal. In rare cases, it has also been linked with allergic skin reactions.

In osteoarthritis of the knee, the use of topical analgesics such as methylsalicylate or capsaicin cream can be appropriate.
For example, AlphaRx's ARX cream with 16% Methylsalicylate produced a three-fold reduction in edema volume at peak activity, when compared to Pfizer's well-known and popular BenGay(TM) "Extra Forte" OTC cream (30% Methylsalicylate).
