n a liquid ester with the chemical formula C8H8O3 that is derived from the bark of a birch, Betula lenta or the leaves of wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens; used as an antiinflammatory, counterirritant, or flavoring agent and to treat pharyngitis, chorea, lumbago, orchitis, mumps, neuralgia, and rheumatism—chronic and acute; precautions: highly toxic.
