toluene /tol·u·ene/ (tol´u-ēn) the hydrocarbon C7H8; it is an organic solvent that can cause poisoning by ingestion or by inhalation of its vapors. toluene (C6H5CH3) [tol′yo̅o̅·ēn] an aromatic, colorless, flammable liquid produced from coal tar, petroleum, or Peruvian tolu balsam.
