methazolamide /meth·a·zo·la·mide/ (meth″ah-zo´lah-mīd) a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used as an adjunct to reduce intraocular pressure in the treatment of glaucoma.
methazolamide [meth′əzō′ləmīd] a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. indication It is prescribed in the treatment of glaucoma. contraindications Severe kidney or liver dysfunction, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, Addison's disease, severe pulmonary obstruction, adrenocortical insufficiency, marked kidney or liver dysfunction, or known hypersensitivity to this drug or many other sulfonamides prohibits its use. adverse effects Among the more serious adverse effects are malaise, aplastic anemia, drowsiness, paresthesia, hypersensitivity reactions, and acidosis. methazolamide [meth″ah-zo´lah-mīd] a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor used in the treatment of glaucoma.
methazolamide (meth´ n brand name: Neptazane; drug class: carbonic anhydrase inhibitor; action: decreases production of aqueous humor in the eye, which lowers intraocular pressure; uses: open-angle glaucoma or preoperatively in narrow-angle glaucoma. methemoglobinemia (met´hēm n an ab-normality of hemoglobin in which the iron is in the ferric state as a result of exposure to industrial substances or the ingestion of toxic agents such as phenacetin, sulfonamides, aniline nitrates, or nitrates. A rare congenital form is seen most commonly in persons with Greek heritage. Symptoms include generalized cyanosis, headache, drowsiness, and confusion. Methemoglobin does not carry oxygen.
