meth·ane (mthn)
n.
An odorless, colorless, flammable gas that is the major constituent of natural gas and is used as a fuel and as an important source of hydrogen. Also called marsh gas.

a simple hydrocarbon in the form of colorless gas, produced by the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. It occurs naturally in the gas from oil wells and coal mines.
