Etymology: Elie Metchnikoff, Russian-French biologist, 1845-1916; Gk, theoria, speculation

the theory that living cells ingest microorganisms. The theory proved correct, as seen in the process of phagocytosis and the ingestion of injurious microbes by leukocytes.
