Etymology: Gk, mesos, middle, enteron, intestine
pertaining to the mesentery, the double layer of peritoneum suspending the intestine from the posterior abdominal wall.

pertaining to or emanating from the mesentery.

mesenteric abscess
in horses causes a syndrome of subacute abdominal pain, due usually to the coexistence of thromboembolic colic, plus the toxemia of the abscess and a commonly concurrent peritonitis.
mesenteric arteritis
see verminous mesenteric arteritis.
mesenteric hemorrhage
spontaneous rupture of a blood vessel in the mesentery in horses, which causes severe colic, hemorrhagic anemia and shock. Blood is found in a paracentesis sample.
mesenteric lymph node
cranial and caudal groups of nodes clustered about the arteries of the same names.
mesenteric receptors
Pacinian corpuscle mechanoreceptors plus some less readily adaptive mechanoreceptors found near mesenteric blood vessels.
mesenteric root
origin of the mesentery from the parietal peritoneum.
mesenteric stretch
a tight bowstring-like edge of mesenteric fold in equine colic, where the large bowel is impacted and very heavy, or in acute intestinal obstruction, with loops of bowel very heavy with fluid. The stretching is a significant factor in causing pain and may be relieved by the horse lying on its back.
mesenteric tear
see mesenteric hernia.
mesenteric torsion
torsion of the mesenteric root, causing ischemia of the mesentery and intestine so that the tissue is devitalized and the animal dies quickly of shock and toxemia.
mesenteric vessel thrombosis
causes thromboembolic colic.
