1. a synthetic fat-soluble vitamin that can be converted in the body to active vitamin K.
2. the basic double ring quinone structure that is the parent structure of the related compounds with vitamin K activity, which can be formed by addition of long side chain substituents.

menadione
[men′ədi·ōn]
a synthetic fat-soluble provitamin that can be chemically converted in the body to active vitamin K. It is used as a source of vitamin K in the treatment of hypoprothrombinemia associated with vitamin K deficiency, as occurs in hepatic or biliary disease or malabsorption syndromes, or after administration of salicylates, anticoagulants, or certain antibiotics. It is administered orally or intramuscularly. See also vitamin K. Also called vitamin K3.

Vitamin K ([phylloquinoneK 1], menadione [[kappa]3], menaquinone [[kappa]2], phylloquinone [2-Me-3 phytyl-1-4 napthoquinone] sourced from plants, menaquinone [2-M3-3-polyisoprenyl-1-4-naptoquinone] bacterial source) plays a major role in calcium metabolism, blood clotting, and sphingolipid metabolism, but is best known for its role in blood clotting.
This is unlikely through food sources, but can occur if you take a supplement with K3, a synthetic form of vitamin K known as menadione.
