Abbr. MSH A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that regulates skin color in humans and other vertebrates by stimulating melanin synthesis in melanocytes and melanin granule dispersal in melanophores. Also called intermedin.
melanocyte-stimulating hormone Physiology A group of polypeptide hormones derived from prepro-opiomelanocorticotropin secreted in the middle lobe of the hypophysis in response to MRH–an oxytocin-related releasing hormone, inhibited by MRIH–a tripeptide release inhibitor, both of which are secreted by the hypothalamus; MSH's function in humans is unknown
