modem [mō′dəm] abbreviation for modulate/demodulate. It is a device for transforming serial binary numbers into an audible tone, and vice versa, for transmission over a telephone line to another computer. Also spelled MODEM. modem, n (modulator/demodulator), a device that converts data from a form compatible with computer manipulation to a form compatible with transmission equipment and vice versa. modem Modulator/demodulator Online An acoustic coupling device that converts a computer's digital signals to analog signals, allowing transmission of data through standard telephone lines.
