specifically, a footrace over a road course of 42.195 km (∼26 mile 385 yd) nowadays covered by elite performers in less than 2 h 10 min (males) and 2 h 20 min (females). Named after the city of Marathon in ancient Greece, imitating the distance run by a messenger from there to Athens, with news of victory over the Persians, in 490 bc. In general, term applied to any form of very high endurance activity.
