one of the least toxic and most widely used organophosphorus insecticides in companion animals. Toxicity when it occurs is usually due to gross overconcentration of the compound in the topical preparation used. See also organophosphorus compound.

The insecticides chlorpyrifos, malathion and diazinon - as they have been commonly used - are likely to lead to the extinction of more than two dozen salmon or steelhead runs in California, Oregon and Washington, according to a draft biological opinion by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the federal agency that functions as a watchdog for ocean-going species.

The latest notification of useful products to be withdrawn from public (and private) availability are that ammonium suplhamate and products containing malathion are to be withdrawn from sale by May 22 and September respectively.
