MSTN

A gene on chromosome 2q32.2 that encodes myostatin, a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family, which regulates cell growth and differentiation in both embryonic and adult bone and cartilage. Myostatin appears to downregulate skeletal muscle growth.

A genome-wide association study for racing performances in Thoroughbreds clarifies a candidate region near the MSTN gene.
This contrasts with GWASs in other phenotypes linked to racing performance such as racing distance, where the most associated SNP related to MSTN had a p-value of <1.
The first was the addition of two reported SNPs related to MSTN in the joint analysis.
We noted that the two SNPs related to MSTN have a negative effect.

In previous studies, SNPs in rabbit MSTN was focused on the exon, intron and 3'-untranslated region.
The presence of MSTN g+6223G>A allelic variation was investigated in 79 lambs, derived from a single NZ Romney sire, heterozygous for MSTN g+6223G>A.
A 273 bp fragment of the 3'UTR region of MSTN was amplified using the PCR primers 5'-AATTA GTTGATTAAATAGTGGT-3' and 5'-ACAATTTGTAAGA TACCATCAG-3' designed to span the g+6223G>A SNP.

Several cattle breeds are characterized by double muscling phenotype (an increase in the number of normal-sized muscle fibers that result in enlarged muscles with deep creases) caused by six different loss-of-function mutations at the MSTN locus (Grobet et al.
The objective of this study was to analyze the genetic variations of MSTN and MYF5 genes in Nanyang, Qinchuan and Jiaxian cattle breeds and to investigate their corresponding effects on the growth traits of these three Chinese cattle breeds.
