MMP21

A gene on chromosome 10q26.13 that encodes matrix metalloproteinase 21, which cleaves alpha-1-antitrypsin and may have a role in embryogenesis and tumour progression. MMP21 is also a less preferred gene symbol for what is now designated as MMP23A (see there), and a less preferred gene symbol for what is now designated as MMP23B (see there).

Retinoid receptor binding sites have been identified in the promoter region for MMP-21 expression, thus retinoic acid upregulates MMP21 mRNA in monocytic U937 cells [1] and the enzyme has been found in cancer cells.
