Möbius syndrome [mer´be-oos]
a hereditary defect of the motor nuclei of cranial nerves, which causes bilateral facial paralysis in various combinations, such as paralysis of the abductors of the eye; persons with this syndrome cannot smile. Anomalies of the limbs are often present, such as missing or webbed fingers. There may or may not be mental retardation. Current treatment is supportive rather than curative. (See Atlas 1, Part C.)
