Pauling, Linus Carl

(1901–94) American biochemist and Nobel laureate who determined the crystal structure of several molecules by means of X-ray diffraction analysis and, with his coworkers, discovered the structure of abnormal HAEMOGLOBIN, responsible for SICKLE-CELL ANAEMIA, using the technique of ELECTROPHORESIS.
