New on the market this year is Ziana, a lincosamide antibiotic and retinoid combination product, indicated for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients aged 12 years or older.
Ampicillin and penicillin are both penicillins, tetracycline and oxytetracycline are both tetracyclines, lincomycin is a lincosamide, and erythromycin is a macrolide.
The first involves alterations in antimicrobial transport (efflux), which is encoded by the mef(A) gene (M-phenotype) and generally confers low-level resistance (MIC 1-16 mg/L) to 14- and 15-membered macrolides, but not lincosamides and streptogramin B.
