| Low-level lincosamide resistance suggests the presence of some efflux mechanism, even if no inhibition by reserpine was observed. Ampicillin and penicillin are both penicillins, tetracycline and oxytetracycline are both tetracyclines, lincomycin is a lincosamide, and erythromycin is a macrolide. The first involves alterations in antimicrobial transport (efflux), which is encoded by the mef(A) gene (M-phenotype) and generally confers low-level resistance (MIC 1-16 mg/L) to 14- and 15-membered macrolides, but not lincosamides and streptogramin B. |
