A group of deep brain structures, common to all mammals and including the hippocampus, amygdala, gyrus fornicatus, and connecting structures, associated with olfaction, emotion, motivation, behavior, and various autonomic functions.

Limbic system
A group of structures in the brain that includes the hypothalamus, amygdala, and hippocampus. The limbic system plays an important part in regulation of human moods and emotions. Many psychiatric disorders are related to malfunctioning of the limbic system.

n system of nuclei in the brain that modulates the mind's emotional tone, labels events as significant, adjusts motivation, encourages bonding, moderates libido, and filters events that are in the environment through the person's internal state of mind (also termed emotional coloring). Also involved in processing the sense of smell, storing powerful emotional memories, and controlling sleep cycles and appetite.

(lim´bik),
n a group of structures within the rhinencephalon of the brain that are associated with various emotions and feelings, such as anger, fear, sexual arousal, pleasure, and sadness. Unless it is modulated by other cortical areas, periodic attacks of uncontrollable rage may occur in some individuals. The function of the system is poorly understood.
