Ligamenta flava in lumbar disc herniation and spinal stenosis: light and electron microscopic morphology. The standard decompressive lumbar laminectomy involves a midline incision over the involved levels of the spine, dissection down to the spinous processes and progressive removal or "unroofing" of the posterior elements of the lumbar canal (spinous processes, laminae and pedicles), as well as removal of thickened ligamenta flava. Elastic fibers are relatively sparse in ligaments, with 2 notable exceptions: the ligamenta nuchae in the cervical region of the vertebral column and the ligamenta flava connecting the laminae of adjacent vertebrae? |
