An abnormally low number of white blood cells in the circulating blood. Also called leukocytopenia.

Leukopenia
A condition in which the number of leukocytes circulating in the blood is abnormally low and which is most commonly due to a decreased production of new cells in conjunction with various infectious diseases or as a reaction to various drugs or other chemicals.

Etymology: Gk, leukos + penes, poor
an abnormal decrease in the number of white blood cells to fewer than 5000 cells per cubic millimeter. The condition may be caused by an adverse drug reaction, radiation poisoning, or pathologic conditions. One or all kinds of white blood cells may be affected. The two most common forms of leukopenia are neutrophilic leukopenia and lymphocytic leukopenia. Also spelled leucopenia. Also called leucocytopenia. Compare aleukia, leukocytosis. leukopenia (lōōˈ·k·pēˑ·nē·),
n a condition characterized by the atypical decrease in circulating white blood cells (less than 5000 cells per cubic millimeter). The condition may be related to radiation poisoning, a reaction to a drug, or other pathologic conditions. Also called
leucocytopenia.

leukopenia (loo´kōpē´nē),
n a decrease in the normal number of white blood cells in the circulating blood. Various lower limits are given; e.g., leukopenia signifies less than 4000 white blood cells per cubic millimeter. See also lymphocytopenia; neutropenia.

leukopenia
reduction of the number of leukocytes in the blood. It is a common manifestation of a number of diseases, especially those caused by viruses, by a severe inflammatory lesion that draws off large numbers of leukocytes, a consumption leukopenia, and by toxins which depress bone marrow function. See also radiation injury, pteridium aquilinum and stachybotris atra.

Laboratory abnormalities include leukopenia, an elevated C-reactive protein level, and an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
The study, published July 20, 2009, in Blood, shows that African-Americans with HIV who possess both a variation in the gene for the Duffy antigen receptor for chemokine (DARC) and leukopenia have slower HIV-to-AIDS progression rates than HIV-infected European-Americans with leukopenia.
