Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
Etymology: Arthur T. Legg, American surgeon, 1874-1939; Jacques Calvé, French orthopedist, 1875-1954; Georg C. Perthes, German surgeon, 1869-1927

osteochondrosis [os″te-o-kon-dro´sis]
a disease of the growth ossification centers in children, beginning as a degeneration or necrosis followed by regeneration or recalcification; known by various names, depending on the bone involved.
osteochondrosis defor´mans ti´biae tibia vara.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
an idiopathic necrosis and lysis of the femoral head; occurs in young, small-breed dogs. Lameness of varying severity occurs and a degenerative arthropathy follows. Surgical removal of the femoral head is the usual treatment. Called also Legg's disease, Legg-Calvé disease, Perthes disease.
