Leeuwenhoek [la´ven-ho̳k] Anton (or Anthony) van (1632–1723). Dutch microscopist. Born in Delft, Holland, he made many interesting discoveries through his careful observations even though his work was not conducted on a definite scientific plan. He gave the first accurate description of the red blood cells in 1674, and in 1677 he described and illustrated the spermatozoa in animals. He investigated the structure of muscle, the crystalline lens, and teeth, and was the first to see protozoa and bacteria under the microscope. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
