the inferior portion of the pharynx, between the epiglottis and the larynx. It corresponds to the height of the epiglottis and is a critical dividing point in separating solids and fluids from air entering the region.

n the division of the pharynx that lies below the superior edge of the epiglottis and opens into the larynx and esophagus.
