Lantana genus of South American plants in the family Verbenaceae; some contain toxic triterpenes, lantadenes, potent hepatoxins; cause severe jaundice and photosensitization. Include L. achyranthifolia, L. aculeata, L. camara, L. montevidensis (L. sellowiana, creeping lantana), L. ovatifolia, L. vetulina; of these only L. camara is well recognized as being pathogenic. Sloughing skin of the muzzle leaves a raw pink surface giving rise to the name 'pink nose'. How to thank TFD for its existence?
