Fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACS) analysis of cells isolated fromlung digests, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, or sputum allows identification of Langerhans' cells (LCs), myeloid DCs types 1 and 2, and plasmacytoid DCs, and distinguishes between mDCs and immatureDCs (iDCs). 7) Because Langerhans' cells are the only monoclonal cells in LCH, Egeler et al speculated that LCH is a type of neoplastic phenomenon. As the first line of defense in the human immune system, Langerhans' cells act like tiny army sentries-- standing guard and assuming responsibility for detecting any foreign substance that comes into contact with the body. |
