Etymology: Paul Langerhans, German pathologist, 1847-1888
a stellate dendritic cell found mostly in the stratum spinosum of the epidermis. It is believed to have an immune function, with surface markers characteristic of macrophages and monocytes.

As the first line of defense in the human immune system, Langerhans' cells act like tiny army sentries-- standing guard and assuming responsibility for detecting any foreign substance that comes into contact with the body.
