Imaging A descriptive term for the coarsely trabeculated shadows in long bones in secondary syphilis, which correspond to gumma and syphilitic periostitis—a term also referring to subperiosteal bone resorption and loss of cortical definition; this same pattern has been described in early hyperparathyroidism or chronic osteomyelitis; when marked, bone resorption imparts a ‘scooped-out’ appearance, trabeculation and radiolucency of the medullary cavity
