Additional clarificatory labels (clitoris, clitoral hood, labia minora and majora, perineum, pubic hair, vagina) were added to the image, and it was given the title "the external female genitals (the vulva).
In her book, Prisoners of Ritual, Hanny Lightfoot-Klein notes that the procedure "consists of clitoridectomy and the excision of the labia minora as well as the inner layers of the labia majora.
According to the authors, she seems surprised when, in response, Parmar and Walker share their knowledge of four types of female genital mutilation, from the simplest circumcision where only the hood of the clitoris is removed, to the most radical - infibulation or pharoanic - which - involves removal of not only the entire clitoris, but also the labia minora and majora and the stitching together of the sides of the vulva, leaving only a small opening.
