n.
A abnormal respiratory pattern characteized by rapid, deep breathing, often seen in patients with metabolic acidosis.

Etymology: Adolf Kussmaul, German physician, 1822-1902; AS, braeth
abnormally deep, very rapid sighing respirations characteristic of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Air hunger Clinical medicine Rapid, deep respiration 2º to stimulation of the respiratory center of the brain triggered by ↓ pH, normal during exercise, and common in Pts with severe metabolic acidosis–eg, DKA. See Metabolic acidosis, Diabetes.
