Using targeted mutations in transgenic mice, scientists began to develop knockout mouse models of human disease to test the role of specific genes in disease etiology and progression (Eddy 1993; Smithies and Kim 1994). Hannon explains that creating a knockout mouse can take well over a year, while knocking down a gene with RNAi takes only a few days. VelociGene uses a proprietary process to create genetic modifications in a mouse in a precise and high-throughput manner and was recently selected by the National Institutes of Health for use in its Knockout Mouse Project. |
