Klumpke's palsy [kloo͡mp′kēz] Etymology: Augusta Dejerine-Klumpke, French neurologist, 1859-1927 atrophic paralysis of the forearm and hand. It is present at birth and involves the seventh and eighth cervical nerves and the first thoracic nerve. The condition may be accompanied by Horner's syndrome, ptosis, and miosis because of involvement of sympathetic nerves. Also called Dejerine-Klumpke's paralysis. How to thank TFD for its existence? Horner's syndrome, symptoms of which include a drooping eyelid, may be present with Klumpke's palsy on the affected side due to the involvement of the sympathetic nerve fibers that traverse T1. Those with Klumpke's palsy have little or no movement in the wrist and hand. |
