coli CO strain was also resistant to gentamicin, kanamycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole; intermediately susceptible to nalidixic acid and tobramycin; and remained susceptible to amikacin, netilmicin, ofloxacin, and ciprofloxacin. Certain pedigrees in Southeast Asia and the Middle East have a mitochondrial DNA mutation that predisposes them to profound nonsyndromic deafness after a short course of a systemic aminoglycoside, particularly kanamycin.
