isotretinoin /iso·tret·i·noin/ (i″so-tret´in-o-in) a synthetic form of retinoic acid, used orally to clear cystic and conglobate acne.
Isotretinoin A powerful vitamin A derivative used in the treatment of acne. It can promote scarring after skin resurfacing procedures. Mentioned in: Acne, Skin Resurfacing isotretinoin [-trətin′ō·in] an antiacne agent. indication Subject to significant restrictions, it is prescribed for the treatment of severe cystic acne. contraindications Pregnancy or sensitivity to the medication or any of its components prohibits its use. adverse effects A powerful teratogen, young females must be thoroughly educated about the risk of pregnancy and are often placed on birth control pills. The most serious adverse effects to users are epistaxis, cheilitis, conjunctivitis, paresthesia, dizziness, and serum lipid and hematologic disturbances. It may also lower bone mineral density, a consideration for those participating in sports. Some patients become severely depressed or psychotic, which can make them aggressive or suicidal. isotretinoin (ī´sōtret´inoin), n brand name: Accutane; drug class: retinoic acid isomer, vitamin A derivative; action: decreases sebum secretion, improves cystic acne; uses: severe recalcitrant cystic acne. isotretinoin a synthetic form of retinoic acid (13-cis-retinoic acid), used in dermatology for the treatment of disorders of keratinization.
