isoflavones (īˑ·sō·flāˈ·vōnz),

n.pl phytoestrogenic compounds found in various plants, including red clover and soy. Used in lowering blood cholesterol levels, in relieving menopausal complaints, in protect-ing against osteoporosis, and as pos-sible preventive against hormone-dependent cancer. Caution in patients with thyroid conditions or with a predisposition to breast cancer, and those taking thyroid medications.
