isoelectric focusing

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
focusing /fo·cus·ing/ (-ing) the act of converging at a point.
isoelectric focusing  electrophoresis in which the protein mixture is subjected to an electric field in a gel medium in which a pH gradient has been established; each protein then migrates until it reaches the site at which the pH is equal to its isoelectric point.

isoelectric focusing,
the ordering and concentration of substances according to their isoelectric points.

isoelectric focusing

isoelectric
showing no variation in electric potential.

isoelectric focusing
an electrophoretic method for separating proteins in gels which depends on the fact that the net charge on the protein varies with the pH of the surrounding medium. At the isoelectric point the protein has no net charge and will not therefore migrate further in an electric field. The polyacrylamide gel is cast in a narrow tube that provides a pH gradient from top to bottom.
isoelectric period
the moment in muscular contraction when no deflection of the galvanometer is produced.

These labelled samples are then combined, run on an isoelectric focusing (IEF) gel in the first dimension, and separated by SDS-PAGE in the second dimension (Figure 2).
Synthetic EPO has slightly different molecular forms to the natural EPO and detection methods include separating those forms into a characteristic pattern using a technique known as isoelectric focusing.
