irrigation /ir·ri·ga·tion/ (ir″ĭ-ga´shun) 1. washing by a stream of water or other fluid. 2. a liquid used for such washing. Ringer's irrigation Ringer's injection packaged for irrigation and used as a topical physiologic salt solution.
Irrigation In medicine, the practice of washing out or flushing a wound or body opening with a stream of water or another liquid.
irrigation [ir′igā′shən] the process of washing out a body cavity or wounded area with a stream of water or other fluid. It is also used to cleanse a tube or drain inserted into the body, such as an indwelling catheter. The procedure is most commonly performed with water, saline, aminoacetic acid, or antiseptic solution on the eye, ear, throat, vagina, or urinary tract. Gentle pressure is applied in the introduction of the fluid, except in the debridement of wounds, and the solution is removed from internal cavities through suction or drainage. This has a significant implication for animals both nutritionally and in terms of health because of the great change in the soil microclimate and the reaction of this on parasite larvae and fungi.
