ionomer (īon´ n a polymer containing ion. In dentistry, ionomers are a mixture of glass and an organic acid. They are clear but vary in the amount of translucency. For this reason, their aesthetic potential does not match that of composite resins. However, ionomers are not likely to shrink or be subject to the microleakage seen in composite resins because the bonding mechanism of ionomers is an acid-base reaction rather than a polymerization reaction. Previous commercial thermoplastic ionomers have all been based on ethylene, though styrene-based ionomers are known in academic literature. Key statement: Covers, mantles and cores for golf balls, and heel counters and toe puffs for footwear are prepared from thermoplastic elastomers, thermoplastic carboxylic acid-based ionomers, and thermoset polyurethanes modified with micropulp produced from organic fibers. His work has included a focus on the use of ionomers to compatibilize blends, and the effect of ionomeric groups and shear on miscibility. |
