Protein ports in cell membranes that are specific for the passage of sodium, potassium, calcium and chloride ions in solution. Changes in the protein configuration, under the influence of various hormone molecule attachment, intracellular ion or other chemical concentration, or electrical potential, cause ion channels to open or close as required. Many diseases result from disordered function of ion channels.
