The 5'-conserved segment includes the gene intI1 that encodes an integrase, the cassette integration site attI1, and a promoter responsible for the expression of the genes located downstream within the variable region. Because this drug is in the new class of integrase inhibitors, it has an entirely different mechanism of action than previous antiretrovirals. At the conference in Rio we are likely to hear a lot about two different categories of drugs now being tested--entry or fusion inhibitors, which prevent HIV from getting into the body's cells, and integrase inhibitors, which prevent HIV from integrating with the cell for the purpose of replicating itself. |
