Any of several discrete DNA sequences that repeat at various sites on a bacterial chromosome, on certain plasmids, and on bacteriophages and that can move from one site to another on the chromosome, to another plasmid in the same bacterium, or to a bacteriophage.

We also tested whether molecular variation in a region of the chromosome with multiple direct repeat (DR) nucleotide sequences and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis with insertion elements IS1548 (9) and IS1562 (10) would differentiate M1 isolates.
