Smith, who had parents with green thumbs (her 92-year-old mother still maintains a rose garden) said she generally uses native plants in her designs, including shrubs such as summersweet, winterberry and inkberry holly, and shrub dogwood; and perennial plants such as great blue lobelia, bee balm, New England aster, Joe-Pye weed, and goldenrod.
The project also added another quarter-acre or so of grove and lawn area to the original playground, with new plantings of maple hedges, ruby horse-chestnuts, English ivy, shamrock inkberry holly, pin oaks, and skyrocket English oaks.
