inferior mesenteric artery, a visceral branch of the abdominal aorta, arising just above the division into the common iliacs and supplying the left half of the transverse colon, all of the descending and iliac colons, and most of the rectum. The visceral arterial circulation consists of the celiac axis, the superior mesenteric artery (SMA), and the inferior mesenteric artery. Colon ischemia was first described as caused by ligation of the inferior mesenteric artery during aortic reconstruction or colon resection but is now recognized to have many potential causes. Immediate angiography of the superior mesenteric artery and inferior mesenteric artery showed no active source of bleeding. |
