bursal
emanating from or pertaining to bursa.

infectious bursal disease
a disease of 3- to 6-week-old chickens caused by an Avibirnavirus which primarily and selectively destroys B lymphocytes in the bursa of Fabricius resulting in a secondary immunodeficiency. Clinical signs are variable and include diarrhea, feather ruffling and droopiness. Death is often a consequence of septicemia associated with normally nonpathogenic strains of bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Salmonella spp. The morbidity in an initial outbreak will be 100% and the mortality up to 30%. Called also Gumboro disease, infectious avian nephrosis.

One such isolate, A/CK/CT/72/2003(H7N2), was obtained from the US Department of Agriculture, NVSL, Ames, Iowa, and used throughout this study to determine whether the peroral administration of rChIFN-[alpha] under conditions found to ameliorate Newcastle disease (6), infectious bronchitis (7), and infectious bursal disease (8), would similarly affect avian influenza.
Results of commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays on serum samples showed that birds had antibodies against infectious bursal disease virus (100%), Newcastle disease virus (97%), avian encephalomyelitis virus (92%), chicken anemia virus (90%), infectious bronchitis virus (85%), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (73%), and Mycoplasma synoviae (68%).
In addition, the company has developed and markets Bursaplex(R), the first in ovo VNF(R)-based vaccine for inoculating against infectious bursal disease (IBD).
