immunomodulator /im·mu·no·mod·u·lat·or/ (-mod´u-la´ter) an agent that augments or diminishes immune responses. immunomodulator [-mod′yəlā′tər] Etymology: L, immunis + modulus, little measure a substance that alters the immune response by augmenting or reducing the ability of the immune system to produce antibodies or sensitized cells that recognize and react with the antigen that initiated their production. Immunomodulators include corticosteroids, cytotoxic agents, thymosin, and immunoglobulins. Some immunomodulators are naturally present in the body, and certain of these are available in pharmacologic preparations. immunomodulation, n. immunomodulator agents that alter the immune response by suppression (immunosuppressive) or enhancement (immunostimulant).
